Visit from the UW Residents and Professors
Ms. Rutledge's UW teaching program hosted a teaching session in room 2! The session focused on integrating math and language development. Ms. Rutledge modeled a lesson on sorting for her fellow residents and then the residents and professors spread out to talk with students about their math thinking. It was a great experience for our students who received loads of individual attention. We hope it was a helpful learning day for the UW residents as well.

100th Day of School!!
Can you believe we've been in kindergarten for 100 Days?!
Our students are 100 days smarter!!! The 100th day Hero visited room 2 and tested the students' counting skills. All 20 students proved they could count to 100 and earned their very own 100th Day Hero capes. Congratulations room 2! You have been working so hard. |
Field Trip to the Zoo
Room 2 had a big day at the Woodland Park Zoo. They braved the cold cheerfully and got to see quite a few animals including penguins, snakes, tree kangaroos, jaguars, lemurs, giraffes, hippos, zebras and a gazelle! During our farm class, the students had the opportunity to pet a few goats and to turn wool into felt with some good old fashioned elbow grease.

Room 2 Auction Art to be Displayed at Geraldine's!
Hawthorne's kindergarten students have been creating art for the annual Hawthorne PTA auction April 5th. With the help of Claudette Glubka, students painted a picture of a place they'd like to go or something they'd like to be when they grow up. All in line with the auction theme "Oh, the Places You'll GO!" The art will be hanging up for 6 weeks at Geraldine's in Columbia City until auction night.

Exploring Wood as Scientists
Room 2 has been studying wood in science. Students have investigated how to make wood sink, compared different types of wood, created particle board and changed wood by sanding it. We will be finishing our wood unit next week by exploring how staining changes wood and how you can join pieces of wood together. Our next unit will involve exploring fabric.

Field Trip to the Aquarium
In December, room 2 went on a field trip to the Seattle Aquarium. The students saw otters, sharks, starfish and a giant octopus! During our museum class, the students had a chance to touch hermit crabs, starfish and other amazing sea creatures. Thank you to all our chaperones who made this possible!

Room 2 has been working hard learning the routines at Hawthorne. One of the biggest things we've been working on is how to stay together in a line. You can see us to the left, looking pretty sharp!
